An alliance of local business leaders is behind the Christmas on Main celebrations to be held in a series over the next month in Washington.
The caroling-centered events are being organized by Gary Ceres and Richard Snow, co-owners of I Can’t Believe It’s a Book Store on Washington’s Main Street.
“I’m just trying to get carolers down here whenever they want to come for the Christmas season,” Ceres said.
One highlight of the scheduled entertainments is a sort of community carol-in set for 6 p.m. Dec. 11.
According to Ceres, this prime-time sing-along is open to anyone who wants to stop by a participating downtown business to pick up a flameless candle.
Attendees are asked to carry these battery-powered lights as they vocalize old-fashioned Christmas tunes on their walk.
The pro-Christmas march will begin in front of the headquarters of BHM Regional Library, at the corner of Second and Market streets, and will end on Main Street in front of the old Bank of Washington building, which houses a store called Whimsy.
Scott Campbell, a real-estate agent affiliated with Century 21, has volunteered to lead the sing-along.
“They just asked me to lead it because they know I’m a ham,” Campbell said, adding he loves singing and lends his voice to the Beaufort County Choral Society.
“We’re carolers from the early 20th century as we walk through our early 20th-century town,” he commented, painting an aural picture of the scene he expects to see on the evening of Dec. 11.
Ceres said he wants to post carolers and other performers at different downtown locations on weekends throughout the month of December.
He’s also written the script for a “Dickens-style” downtown walking tour he said will be held Fridays and Saturdays next month.
And Santa Claus will be on hand at the book store, which will also accept children’s letters to the North Pole during regular business hours.
