PINETOWN — Cecil Clayborne Jr., age 70, died Friday, February 18, 2011 in his home after an extended illness.
A graveside service will be held Monday, February 21, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington.
Mr. Clayborne, known by many friends and family members as “Big Boy” was born on April 26, 1940, in Beaufort County, North Carolina, and moved to Greene County when he was nine-years-old. As a child and young adult, Mr. Clayborne worked with his parents and siblings on the farm. He graduated from Walstonburg High School in 1959 and later married and raised his two children in Bull Head Township. Mr. Clayborne retired as a captain from Greene Correctional Center in 1997 after twenty-nine years of service. Mr. Clayborne’s love of farming and fond childhood memories led him to return to Beaufort County to live after his retirement.
Mr. Clayborne is remembered affectionately for his genuine, unpretentious manner and his straightforward personality. He was a devoted husband and father, who doted on his three grandchildren. He remained close to his four siblings and his mother until his death.
Mr. Clayborne is survived by his wife, Barbara Creech Clayborne of the home; his son, Joseph “Joey” Clayborne of Pactolus; his daughter, Amy Clayborne McLean of Charlotte; his mother, Libbie Harris Clayborne of Maury; his brother, Ralph Kenneth Clayborne of Raleigh; and his sisters, Jean Hunter Ross of Swansboro, Mary Esther Stark of Melbourne, Florida, and Rebecca Clayborne Foster of Snow Hill; and grandchildren, Anthony Clayborne of Pactolus, and Caroline and Sam McLean of Charlotte.
Pallbearers will include Anthony Clayborne, Jonathan Foster of Snow Hill, Chris Faulkner of Snow Hill, Fred Kittrell of LaGrange, Ray Harris of Pinetown, Jim Langley of Maury, and Michael Scholz of Spring Lake.
The family will receive friends at the Farmville Funeral Home, Sunday, February 20, from 7 until 9 p.m.
Flowers are welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889 or to the ECU Medical and Health Sciences Foundation, 525 Moye Boulevard, Greenville, NC 27834, where the donations will be earmarked for the Rehabilitation Center at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
