Mrs. Hazel Swain Cutler, 80, a resident of Chesapeake, VA died Monday, February 21, 2011 at the home of her daughter in Albuquerque, NM.
Hazel was born in Fentress, VA (Chesapeake) on March 13, 1930, daughter of the late Acey Alton Swain and Viva Melvina Brownlee Swain and was fifth of their nine children. She married Redding Boyd “R.B.” Cutler on October 3, 1953, who preceded her in death on April 11, 2010.
She was a 1948 graduate of Great Bridge High School and attended Keyes Business School. Hazel retired in 1987 from her second love, Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation. She was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at Chesapeake General Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela V. Cutler, M.D., and husband Robert McDevitt of Albuquerque, NM; a son, Sidney R. Cutler and wife Karen Stone Cutler of Blounts Creek, NC; five grandchildren, Molly Cutler McDevitt, Dara Cutler McDevitt, Stephen Robert Cutler, Aaron Sidney Cutler and Caroline Marie Cutler; four sisters, Vee McPherson, Betty Vanderploeg and Marion Yoder all of Chesapeake, Estelle Pearson of Peoria, AZ; one brother, Stanley Swain of Chesapeake as well as a large extended family.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Charles L. Moseley at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the C.B. Cutler Family Cemetery, Camp Hardee Road, Blounts Creek, NC officiated by the Rev. Melvin Haas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry Ministry of Great Bridge Baptist Church, 640 Battlefield Blvd. S., Chesapeake, VA 23322 or to East Carolina Council, BSA, 313 Boy Scout Blvd., Kinston, NC 28503 or to a charity of one’s choice.
