Response to “Bills would hurt public schools”

To the Editor:

In response to the recent article “Bills would hurt public schools,” of course Mr. Belcher thinks that more charter schools would hurt public schools. He is like everyone else who is involved with public education. If they had all the gold in Fort Knox and all the money in Las Vegas, they would still need more. Education takes up over 56 percent of the state budget and this does not include Head Start, Fair Start, Even Start, Smart Start and More at Four. Even with all this, North Carolina still ranks 47th in education. It’s time for a change.

Then we have Stan White, who is playing politics with the issue with his statements about the only meal some students get are at school. With all the help with welfare programs some of these families get, is it asking too much for them to feed their children at home. Mr. White’s gut feelings are amazing, but not surprising. They will look good at election time.
