WDN launches free new website

As part of ongoing modifications and upgrades in news delivery, the Washington Daily News launched a new website at 5 p.m. Thursday.
While the web address remains the same (www.wdnweb.com), the biggest difference between the new website and the former one is that all online content is now free.
In addition to content posted in the news, sports and obituary categories, the updated site now includes editorials, columns, letters to the editor and society news such as engagements, wedding and anniversary announcements and births. It also will feature a robust calendar which can provide maps to your selected events.
Another benefit of the new site is the improved level of interaction with readers. The homepage includes links for readers to submit letters to the editor, offer news tips or deliver digital photos with a few clicks of the mouse. Classified ads, subscription requests and wedding and engagement announcements may be submitted online through the website.
“The new website platform and design are a departure from our old model,” said Publisher Ray McKeithan. “By posting more local content, the site will continue to grow in traffic and readership. We feel it furthers our mission of keeping citizens informed and entertained.”
The Daily News is expanding its presence on Facebook and Twitter. Social-media followers may expect a daily glimpse into the newsroom to see what’s on tap in the next day’s newspaper. Users wishing to follow the Washington Daily News on its new Twitter account can visit http://www.twitter.com/wdnweb.
As Daily News staff members shoot video, those videos will be made available on the homepage. Those wanting to share videos with the Daily News may upload them to YouTube and e-mail a link to yourtake@wdnweb.com.
Lastly, the updated site allows users to comment on stories. People wishing to post comments must register using the “register” link under the Washington Daily News logo at the top of the home page.
Once registered, users will receive an e-mail with a password to log into the site to make comments.
“We are very excited about the opportunities this new website affords us and the readers,” said Managing Editor Christ Prokos. “It clearly advances our ability to interact with the community and have the community interact with us.”
