To the Editor:

The piece on public record accessibility caught my attention. A few months back, for employment reasons, I needed my own criminal record check from every county I’ve lived in since I was 18, which is seven counties in a total of 20 years. I tried to get a statewide criminal history check from the Beaufort County Courthouse, but they said that they don’t do that.

It’s not fair that I would have to drive to seven different counties and pay the fees at each one to obtain my own criminal history check. Sure it’s available online, so they say, but I don’t trust all those sites and don’t know how correct my criminal history check would be. Any citizen should be able to get his/her statewide criminal history check in their respective counties.
