Mr. Eugene Eldridge “Gene” King, Jr., 72, a resident of 115 N. Academy St., Washington, died Sunday, March 27, 2011, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, conducted by the Rev. Joan Fisher. Russell Smith, Don Wilkinson, Greg Wilkinson, Vance Bell, Sylvester Rogers and Tony Hoell will serve as pallbearers.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Piedmont, S.C.

Mr. King was born in Buncombe County, N.C., on Nov. 30, 1938. He was the son of the late Eugene Eldridge King, Sr. and Helen Saunders King. Mr. King graduated from Greenville (S.C.) Senior High School and attended Clemson University. He started his career in newspaper advertising with the Charlotte Observer News in 1969 and continued in that until his retirement from the Washington Daily News in 2009. Mr. King attended Ware’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club.

On Oct. 5, 1957, Mr. King married the former Mary Alice McKittrick, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. King is survived by two sons, Brian C. King of Pickins, S.C., David N. King and wife, Charlene of Woodruff, S.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher, Stuart, Stephanie, Jackson and Davis; a brother, Dr. Gerald W. King and wife, Betty of Seabrook Island, S.C.; two nephews and one niece.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home, 115 N. Academy St., Washington.
