The Cypress Group of the Sierra Club will host a program, Fishermen and the State of Our Fisheries: Conservation and Regulatory Issues from a Commercial Fisherman’s Perspective, at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The group meets at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 131 Oakmont Drive, Greenville. Capt. Jimmy Ruhle, a commercial fisherman from Wanchese who operates a commercial-fishing vessel out of Hampton, Va., will speak.

“The subject of this program is very timely,” says Mary Alsentzer, chairwoman of the Cypress Group. “Just this week, the public had an opportunity to comment at a public hearing of the N.C. Legislature’s Regulatory Reform Committee here in the Greenville area. Several commercial fishermen were present to ask for a review of rules governing their industry. It will be interesting to hear Capt. Ruhle’s opinions and ideas on the matter. I hope that other commercial fishermen and area recreational fishermen will feel free to join us.”

All meetings of the Cypress Group of the Sierra Club are free and open to the public.
