LETTERS TO THE EDITOR-April 29, 2011

To the Editor:
In a “letter to the editor,” Belhaven Town Councilman Steve Carawan pointed out numerous contacts that the Town Council has made over the last three years trying to acquire natural gas facilities with little or no success. I can only hope they will continue their efforts as natural gas is going to be the “fuel of choice” in the future and facilities must be in place for coastal citizens to utilize this lower cost energy source.
It would also be helpful to know what the Town Council and Town Manager have done to acquire broadband communication opportunities for Belhaven citizens. This will be available to rural citizens of Beaufort, Hyde and Washington counties in 2012-2013.
In addition, the N.C. Real Estate Commission reprimanded Adam O’Neal.  This information was furnished to the WDN by the commission but they failed to publish it. This is public information that should be made available to all citizens.

To the Editor:
Washington’s future economy certainly is getting a boost from our available ecotourism. With our numerous accesses to the Pamlico-Tar River, the popularity of recreational boating is on the rise in our town. In addition to motor boating and sailing, there is a definite increase in local kayaking events that are promoted through Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, TRREC, and Inner Banks Outfitters. Interest in this new direction can also be seen from all those who are actively pursuing improvements to Washington’s waterways and dockage.
In addition to the ongoing planning of the Riverfront Promenade and docks, plans to improve the public docks at Havens Gardens are now included. Last year, the city’s CAMA permit was modified to include the addition of a floating kayak dock to be added to a public dock at Havens Gardens. This kayak dock will assist kayakers safely into Runyon Creek and the Pamlico-Tar River. Private funding for this dock is through the nonprofit, Safe Launch Kayak Initiative. Taxpayers’ money for the purchase or installation will not be used.
Come to the Iron Paddle 200, this Sunday at noon, for more information and watch a fun, fund raising event to support this new kayak dock for Washington’s residents and visitors alike.
