Mr. Albert Edgar “Ed” Gibson, Jr., age 88, a resident of 108 North Reed Drive, Washington, NC died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Wilson Medical Center, Wilson, NC.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church of Washington with Rev. Darryl Evans and Rev. Stewart LaNeave officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Lawrence Ward, Jay Martin, Dick Roy, Dick Paul, James Phillips and Phil Lewis will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Gibson was born in Edison, Georgia on July 14, 1922 son of the late Albert Edgar Gibson, Sr. and Martha Tweety Brockington Gibson. He was a 1943 graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in chemical engineering. On August 24, 1943 he married Mary Virginia Council Gibson, who preceded him in death on December 14, 2008. Mr. Gibson was very involved in his church and community. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington where he served as an elder and where he also helped lead musical meditations before the morning worship service. Mr. Gibson had served multiple terms on the Washington City Council. He was a member of the Down East Seniors. He worked as a chemical engineer for many years at Texasgulf (now PotashCorp of America).
Mr. Gibson is survived by three children: Ed Gibson, III and wife Lynne of Huntersville, NC, Stuart Ann Gibson of Wilson, NC and Lesley Lynn Shaneyfelt and husband Allen of Wilson, NC, two grandchildren; James and Lindsay Shaneyfelt of Wilson, NC; three step grandchildren; Laura Glover and Justin Glover both of Cincinnati, OH and Mathew Glover of Huntersville, NC, two step great-grandchildren; Jorden and Samantha Glover both of Cincinnati, OH, and a sister; Jo Lehnberg of Wilmington, NC.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Gibson is preceded in death by a brother, James Gibson and a sister, Alberta Katkaveck.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 2, 2011 from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory of Washington.
