More than 150 Washington-area residents turned out to tone up for the Turnage Theater April 27, walking or running a 5K race around the Chocowinity community of Cypress Landing.
The fundraiser was organized within two weeks of the theater’s financial appeal, reads a news release on the event.
Walkers and runners, as well as those who chose to do a leisurely 1 mile stroll or just sit and watch the marathon curbside, each paid $25 per person for the privilege.
The groups from Blount’s Creek, Washington, and Chocowinity raised $4,110 for the Turnage.
Local musicians Les and Cindy Sutorius kicked off the event with a medley of tunes, including the theme song from “Rocky,” which got the racers revved up and ready to go.
Local businesses also threw their hats into the ring, donating goods and services for the event.
After the race, participants were treated to an array of finger foods provided by local restaurants and “best of Broadway” music played by Cypress Landing resident and pianist Dave Grahek.
Event visors were awarded the top 10 finishers: Robert Mayo, Bob Mayo, Brad Smith, Rick Coles, Ed Noll, Bill Davis, Chris Harris, Larry Ahlman, Jim Curran, and Page Wright.
Raffle prizes were awarded to walkers and others.
