The Four Rivers Conference proved its strength during the first round of the NCHSAA 1-A softball playoffs as all six of the teams representing the conference moved on to the second round as Riverside, Southside, Northside, South Creek, Camden and Perquimans all advanced.
No. 1 Riverside (18-6) blasted wild card entry Mattamuskeet 16-0 and will play the winner Camden, who despite having a 17-6 record made the playoffs as a wild card.
The winner of that game will advance to the District Round of the playoffs where it will face whoever wins the No. 5 South Creek (16-7)-No. 2 Rosewood (10-8, Carolina) battle.
South Creek was able to reach the second round when it topped No. 1 Creswell (7-6, Tideland) 10-1 on Tuesday.
No. 2 Southside (19-4) was flawless in its playoff opener as pitchers Savannah Mumford and Katy Laughinghouse teamed up to throw a perfect game during its 19-0 win over No. 4 North Edgecombe (8-6).
That win set the stage for the Seahawks to face Four Rivers Conference, and area rival, Northside in a great second round showdown. The No. 4 Panthers (12-9) knocked off No. 1 Gates (15-7, Tar Roanoke) 5-1 on Tuesday to advance.
Whoever wins that matchup will play for a district title against the winner of the No. 1 Princeton (18-5, Carolina) – No. 3 Perquimans (14-7) contest.
NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL
As in softball, the Four Rivers Conference has done a good job representing itself in the postseason so far this year. Four, Four Rivers teams will be battling it out for a district title tonight as No. 1 Plymouth (21-4) takes on No. 5 Camden (12-12) at home while No. 2 Riverside (21-4) will square off against No. 3 Perquimans (18-7) in Williamston.
The Vikings have had an exciting run through the playoffs as a Ronnell Blount delayed steal of home in the eighth inning fended off upset-seeking conference rival Southside (9-12) 3-2 to escape the first round of the playoffs. In the second round, the Vikings had to top another conference foe as they beat wild card entry Manteo (12-12) 7-5.
If Plymouth can win tonight it will advance to the Sectional Round of the playoffs where it will face the winner of the Riverside-Perquimans contest.
