On the right path

It took awhile, but the skeletal structure at 603-605 Park Drive in Washington is coming down.

It’s about time.

What started out as a framework for a church — Love, Faith and Victory Church — became an eyesore for many years. On Monday night, the City Council decided to do something about that eyesore. The council condemned the structure as unsafe and ordered it be demolished and fill material at the site be removed.

The owner(s) of the property failed to respond to the request by the city’s senior building inspector to bring the structure into compliance with city ordinances. In light of that, the council acted properly. The property posed a danger. The city will remove that danger.

The city’s action will also remove an unappealing site, something many city residents and visitors have complained about.

The city’s doing the right thing here, but it should have happened sooner. That said, it’s good to see the city moving in the right direction with eyesore and/or unsafe properties.

Keep it up.
