The fledgling Tar-Pamlico Civitan Club will hold an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at The Blind Center, 221 N. Harvey St., Washington, according to Ben St. John, president of the New Bern Civitan Club which is sponsoring the Tar-Pamlico club.

St. John said the meeting is open to individuals interested in joining the club, and that the guest speaker will be Stephanie Crosby, a member of New Bern’s Tryon Civitan Club. She will discuss the Civitan mission and projects the Tryon club has undertaken to serve various charitable organizations.

This is the third membership-building meeting of the Tar-Pamlico club which, once established, will be the only Civitan club in Beaufort County. St. John said “good progress is being made in generating interest in the club and all indications are that the organizers will have the requisite 20 members necessary to apply for a Civitan International charter by mid-July, if not sooner.”

Membership in the club is open to both men and women at least 18 years of age who are of good character and reputation.
The initiation fee is $25. Once the club is organized, the members will determine the projects the club will undertake
and the charitable organizations that it will support.

Civitan is an international service organization committed to building good citizenship by providing a volunteer
organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with
developmental disabilities.

There are more than 1,500 Civitan clubs with 40,000 members in 30 countries. North Carolina is home to 118 clubs
with approximately 3,300 enrollees.
