A Monday-evening wreck in Beaufort County resulted in the death of an 8-year-old girl and injured three others, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Tim Crumpler.

The girl, Candy Frangoez, died at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after being airlifted there Monday evening, Crumpler said.

The two-vehicle crash occurred about 4:55 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 264 and N.C. Highway 32, known as Douglas Crossroads.

A Volkswagen station wagon, driven by Maria Prado, 37, of Pinetown, was headed north on N.C. 32 when it went through the intersection and was struck by a 2010 Ford Edge headed east on U.S. 264, according to the Highway Patrol. The Edge was driven by Joan Armstrong, 69, of Belhaven. She was not injured.

Charges against Prado are pending, Crumpler said.

The Volkswagen came to a full stop at the intersection, but it made left turn into the path of the eastbound Edge, Crumpler said.

All the injured children were back-seat passengers in Prado’s vehicle. Candy was seated on the left side of the back seat. Italy Frangoez, 3, was seated in the middle of the back seat. Mario Frangoez, 6, was seated on the right side of the back seat. He was transported by ambulance to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. A PCMH spokeswoman did not immediately return a phone call seeking information on his condition Tuesday evening.

Prado and Italy Frangoez were transported to Beaufort County Medical Center for treatment and later released.

Each child was wearing a seat belt or otherwise restrained, Crumpler noted.

Trooper J.P. Howard investigated the wreck.
