Raymond Leroy Hassell

Raymond Leroy Hassell, 91, of Plymouth, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Roanoke Landing Nursing Center in Plymouth.

Born July 2, 1920, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Luther A. Hassell and Tempie Overton Hassell and was preceded in death by his brother, Nathan E. Hassell; sisters, Martha Jane Phelps, Ethel H. Furlough, Ira H. Johnson, Selma H. Overton and Matoka H. Spruill. Mr. Hassell retired from Weyerhaeuser Corporation with 44 years service and served as an elder, deacon, and Bible School superintendent of Plymouth Church of Christ for many years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and president of Albemarle Hunting Club for 30 years.

His family includes his wife of 72 years, Olive Respess Hassell of Plymouth, N.C.; daughters, Greta H. Barber and husband Bobby and Wanda H. Williams and husband Dennis of Plymouth, N.C.; sons, Gene R. Hassell and wife Linda of Columbia, N.C., Gary L. Hassell and wife Susan of Greenville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 29, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Plymouth Church of Christ, Plymouth, with Bob Moulden officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Plymouth Church of Christ Family Life Center and other times at the residence.
