As part of Washington’s Tar/Pamlico River Stormwater Program, the city’s water-resources division conducted its fourth-annual stormwater-awareness contest with aid from Beaufort County Schools during the 2010-2011 school year. This year, the city collaborated with the eighth-grade science classes at P.S. Jones Middle School in developing a stormwater-related project. Working in teams of three or four members, students developed public-service announcements that dealt with stormwater issues. The teachers graded the PSA’s as part of their regular schoolwork. The top presentations were delivered to the city, which selected contest winners. The students submitting the best PSA’s were (from left), Zack Crawford, Heather Shea, Taylor Abele and Rachel Alligood, who were recognized for their work by Mayor Archie Jennings (right) during a recent City Council meeting. The winning PSA urged viewers to keep wetlands clean by not throwing trash into wetlands or areas that drain into wetlands.
