Get piggy with it

The embers are glowing redder and redder as Smoke on the Water approaches.
The Washington (noon) Rotary, with a little help from its friends, is making preparations for one of Washington’s signature festivals. Last year, the Rotarians took over the festival. If their handling of the 2010 Smoke on the Water is any evidence, the 2011 version of Smoke on the Water will be better than its 2010 predecessor.
Although many people are working hard to make sure this year’s Smoke on the Water has much to offer, it should be noted that Spencer Stanley and Jerry Evans are the lead “horses” of the team pulling the 2011 Smoke on the Water wagon.
From what we’ve gathered, a revamped Parade of Pigs, the chili contest and, of course, the barbecue contest, are integral parts of the waterfront festival. Pamlico Pals will conduct its Duckie Derby, with proceeds from the fundraiser going to help the organization continue to provide one-on-one mentoring services to local at-risk children.
With the money they raise with the festival, Rotarians continue to provide programs and services to their community in an effort to improve it and enhance the quality of life. While Smoke on the Water is about having fun, it’s also about raising money to make the community a better place to live.
When it comes to Smoke on the Water, our advice is to make a pig of yourself. You — and the community — will be glad you did.
