Atkinson was recognized for his many contributions in helping provide prosthetic limbs to thousands of amputees, many of them children, in Sri Lanka. The amputees are mostly victims of Sri Lanka’s civil war and the multitude of land mines that remain after the war ended in 2009. Amputees in Sri Lanka need medical care and prosthetic limbs or face being confined to wheelchairs or beds.
