Ottis “June” Carawan Jr., 91, died April 27, 2012, at his home in Swan Quarter. He was born on Aug. 29, 1920, to the late Ottis Carawan Sr. and Martha Cahoon. June was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mason; a sister, Minerva Bong; and a brother, Merlin Carawan. Mr. Carawan retired from the U.S. Navy and served as a submariner in World War II.

Survivors include his special companion, Jane Bembenick; a brother, Sherlin Carawan and wife Joyce of Swan Quarter; a daughter, Bonnie Swecker and husband Mark of Roanoke Rapids; a daughter, Linda Warden and husband Paul of Mechanicsville, Va.; six grandchildren, Matthew Swecker and wife Natalie, Kent Swecker and wife Mary Jane, Adam Swecker and wife Sara, Emerson Warden, Elizabeth Williams and husband Dan, and Jenny Warden; and seven great-grandchildren, Elijah, Hannah, Zak, Lilia, Lane and Holt Swecker, and Eliza Williams. Also remembering “June Bug” are Jane’s four children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Swan Quarter. Burial will follow with military honors at Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter.
