“Freestyle Thinking” by photographer Chuck Beckley of Beaufort received 1st Place in the Documentary/People category in the 2011 Photography Show.

The fifth annual juried photography exhibit by the Beaufort County Arts Council (BCAC) is scheduled for July 19 – Aug. 30 in the Washington Civic Center gallery in historic downtown Washington.  Entries are being accepted for the exhibit through Friday, June 8, at 4 p.m.

BCAC began the annual juried photography show in the summer of 2008 in response to the overwhelming amount of entries in the organization’s annual Fine Arts Show.

The juror for the upcoming 2012 exhibit will be Daniel Kariko. Daniel Kariko was born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia and in 1994 moved the U.S. for political reasons. Kariko received his Masters of Fine Arts in 2002 from Arizona State University.

While a graduate student, he was awarded a residency in Salzburg, Austria. From 2002 until 2010, Kariko was a faculty member at Florida State University Department of Art in Tallahassee, FL. He is presently an Assistant Professor of Photography at East Carolina University in Greenville.

Mr. Kariko’s work is currently on exhibit at Lone Leaf Gallery and Custom Framing located at 101 W. Main St. in Washington.

Categories for the photography show include Documentary/People, Landscapes/Places, Nature/Wildlife, Mixed Media/Alternative Process, and a special Youth Division (under age 18).

Special awards for the exhibit include Best In Show, sponsored by Stewart’s Jewelry Store ($150), the Washington Daily News Award for best example of photo journalism ($100), and the Frank Sommerkamp History Award for work best depicting a sense of history ($100).  ASAP Photo & Camera of Greenville is sponsoring two awards – Best Color, digitally enhanced, and Best Color, non-enhanced. The ASAP awards are a 16-inch by 20-inch print of the winner’s choosing that includes a canvas wrap, a $90 value.

The most recent award categories are two youth awards sponsored by Kevin Scott Cutler: the Ernest E. and Ethel Harding Cutler Award ($50) and the Jesse Lee and Corinne Mayo Smith Award ($50), both for outstanding work in the Youth category.

Each category will receive a $100 first-place and $50 second-place cash award.  Third Place and up to nine honorable mentions in each category, along with all Youth Division awards, will receive ribbons.

A maximum of four entries may be submitted. The entry fee is $20 for one or two works and $7.50 for each additional entry. Photographers may submit images on a CD with a .JPG format of 300 dpi. Actual prints, framed or unframed, may also be entered. Submission of entries does not guarantee acceptance for exhibition – only juried work will exhibit. Entries may be mailed to PO Box 634 or dropped off at the arts council at 108 Gladden Street, Washington, NC, 27889.

Accepted works will be notified beginning June 20.
