Several BCCC students served by the college’s Student Support Services participated in a series of events that highlight proper business etiquette.

A series of business dinner workshops were coordinated by Phylicia Bridgers, a SSS counselor, with the help of Louise Hinsley and Kellie Daughtry of the Beaufort County Cooperative Extension Service.

The workshops were designed to help students become more confident with business etiquette as they look for jobs or pursue opportunities to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, according to Bridgers.

“These are skills that give students the confidence they may need to feel comfortable meeting and dining with co-workers or clients in the work force as well as events they may need to attend after they transfer to other institutions of higher learning,” she said.

Among the skills the students learned were the importance of a firm handshake, proper table manners, the art of dinner conversation and the proper way to greet and talk to other guests.

The final session of the three-workshop series gave participating students the chance to practice their skills at a dinner meeting at a local Washington restaurant.

Student Support Services is a federal program designed to help qualifying students with a range of academic and support services.

The program provides tutorial services, academic counseling, college transfer help, skills development workshops, access to technology and cultural enrichment opportunities.
