It amazes me that we are willing to put scores of our sons and daughters in harm’s way in order to keep a steady supply of oil, but we worry about the bald eagle as a possible casualty of alternative energy.

 

They say that if possums could fly, they would probably be hit by airplanes. Now, we know they would probably fly into those demon windmills.

 

Many thanks to the Washington Daily News for continuing to print Walter Williams’ columns. He’s a great columnist and on Sunday, regarding taxpayer-funded benefits, he was absolutely right on.

 

The column “Mom, may I have a biscuit, please?” in Saturday’s paper was outstanding and enjoyed very much by my wife and I. For my wife, it was very reminiscent of the times that she grew up in.

 

The Chocowinity Police Department is a waste of time and a lot of money.

 

I have no objection to local government loaning money or giving tax incentives to entice a business to come into our area. But economic development as practiced in Beaufort County is gambling with someone else’s money, a secret process conducted behind closed doors in which taxpayers’ money goes to pick winners and losers under the disguise of creating jobs when in reality it is giving private business owners taxpayers’ money. Why should the city contribute taxpayers’ money to economic development when the city taxpayers have already contributed once through their county taxes?

 

Congratulations to Gillian Pollock for her excellent column “The men who make a difference” you printed on Father’s Day. It was outstanding.

 

I really liked your public-records listings. You did a great job.

 

That was all good public information about the police and the sheriff and everything, but you need a magnifying glass to be able to read it. You could make it bigger next time.
