The Optimist Club of Washington presented four $1,500 scholarships to area high school students who maintained at least a 2.5 GPA and played sports in high school or in an Optimist Club-sponsored program. Two scholarships were given as Optimist Club Youth Appreciation awards, one was presented in memory of longtime Optimist Club member Earl Mitchell, while the last was given in honor of longtime active Optimist Club member Linley Gibbs. The applicants were judged on community service, academics and having exemplary contributions to their community and school.
