William E. “Billy” Stancill

William Edwin “Billy” Stancill, 90, a resident of 4221 Market Street Extension, Washington, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Clyde Roberson, David Clark Sr., Steve Tubaugh, Joey Rogers, Bobby Rees and Sammy Hodges.
Honorary pallbearers will be Durwood Cratch, Doug Ingalls, James Lupton, Ray Briley, Richard Craig, Al McMicken and H.S. Hodges.
Mr. Stancill was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 31, 1921. He was the son of the late W.G. Stancill and Daisy Beulah Padgett Stancill. Mr. Stancill attended Porter Military Academy and the Citadel. He served in the 5th Signal Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Corporal.
Mr. Stancill worked as a shoe salesman for Wellco and as manager of the Wholesale Fish and Crab Company in Oriental. Later, he was a manager with AFLAC Insurance Company for 24 years.
Mr. Stancill was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington. He was a member of Orr Lodge #104, A.F. & A.M., the Shriners, the Sudan Temple and the Sudan Temple Road Runners. Mr. Stancill made over 100 trips to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, S.C., and numerous trips to the Shriners Burn Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition, he was a member of the Down East Seniors and an honorary member of Old Ford Ruritan Club. In his spare time, Mr. Stancill loved dancing and fishing.
On Dec. 12, 1942, Mr. Stancill married the former Adelene Flowers, who preceded him in death, Feb. 16, 1991. On April 12, 1997, he married the former Stella Cratch, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are his children, Maria Stancill Duke and her husband, Frank of Washington, William “Bill” Stancill and his wife, Becky of Raleigh; Betsy Boyd and her husband, Allen of Washington; Patrick Davis and his wife, Amy of Greenville; Jerry Davis and his wife, Brittany of Washington; grandchildren, William Elliott Stancill and his wife, Jennifer; Megan Stancill, Dusty Jarman, Amber Jarman, Charli Boyd, Blake Alexander Davis, Madison Grace Davis; great-granddaughter, Aubrey Grace Stancill; special friends, David and Sheila Clark, Clyde and Miriam Roberson, Ray and Ebe Briley, James and Colleen Lupton, Fred and Colleen Cargile and his faithful canine companion, Dixie.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Stancill was preceded in death by a brother, Godfrey Wells Stancill.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
