WILLIAMSTON — For the second straight night the clouds held back rain while the athletes on the fields underneath it held nothing back during the District 7 8U, 10U and 12U All-Stars tournament at Kehukee Park in Williamston.
After severe thunderstorms postponed three straight days of action, the double-elimination tournament resumed on Thursday and continued again on Friday night unimpeded.
“I’m a very happy guy because we had no rain today,” tournament director Steve Barnes said. “I thought it was going to rain but it never did, so we’re very, very happy. It was a beautiful night at the ballpark.”
The tournament action was in full swing on Friday as several key games were played.
In the 10U division, Williamston rallied back from a 4-3 deficit in the fifth inning to top rival West Martin 6-4 and improve its record to 3-0.
Austin Scott scored twice for Williamston, while Todd Johnson, Brandon Beach, Reese Bullock and Cody Stalls each scored runs.
For West Martin (2-1), Cole Lanier, Jackson Bryant, Hunter Rodgers and Chris May each crossed home plate.
Upon conclusion of that game, Bath battled Belhaven in a game that ran past deadline.
In the 12U division, Plymouth jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Williamston and rode it to a 6-3 victory as pitcher Tyler Hendrix picked up the win and improved his team’s record to 3-0. For Williamston (2-1), the loss was its first of the tourney.
Aryn Gibson and Dylan Sawyer each crossed home for Plymouth, while Hendrix and Lelon Stotesberry each scored twice.
Hunter Kinion, Conner Harrison and Cody Thompson all scored runs for Williamston.
In 8U action, Edenton topped Perquimans 11-9, while Chocowinity eliminated Jamesville.
The 8U Ahoskie-Edenton game, along with the 12U Edenton-Belhaven battle both ended past deadline.
The tournament will resume today when the action begins at 10 a.m. Weather permitting, each age group’s championship game is scheduled for Sunday.
