Mavis W. Foster

Mrs. Mavis Dell Worthington Foster, 90, went to be with her Lord on Friday, July 20, 2012, when she peacefully passed away surrounded by her loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2012, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Rev. Medford Hopkins. Burial will follow at Pamlico Beach Cemetery at Ryder Hill.
Her grandsons: Hunter Venters, Chuck Foster, Josh Hopkins, Jody Hopkins, Jordan Foster, and Frankie Voliva will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlton Venters, Chris Presser, Eric Slade, Tommy Worthington, Justin Foster, Ken Butler and Aaron Foster.
Mrs. Foster was the daughter to Herbert and Betty Worthington and grew up in the Helen’s Crossroads community of Pitt County. Mavis graduated from Ayden High School.
On November 19, 1932, she married her love, Abb Benjamin Foster. They moved to Pamlico Beach and started their family. Together they went back to Pitt County and farmed and raised their five children until their retirement in 1969 and moved back to Pamlico Beach. A loving and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother, she took pride in her homemaking skills, was an outstanding cook, enjoyed her garden and was a member of the Shelmerdine Baptist Church in Chicod.
Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Abb B. Foster; parents, Herbert and Betty Worthington; two sons, Dalton Earl Foster, Ronald Grey Foster; her grandson, Derek Foster and her only brother, H.J. Worthington.
She is survived by her children, Betty Smith and husband, Bobby Smith of Greenville, Dwight Foster and wife, Grace of Ayden, Charles Foster and wife, Brenda of Sidney Crossroads, Abbie Hopkins and husband, Freddie of Pamlico Beach, and Stevie Foster and wife, Kim of Greenville; 10 grandchildren Angie Venters, Karen Presser, Anna Butler, Chuck Foster, Joanna Slade, Freda Dale Foster, Joshua Hopkins, Jody Hopkins, Jordan Foster, and B.G. Simpkins; 17 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Ashton, Brittany, Courtney, Aaron, Caleb, Levi, Savannah, Kathleen, Jessica, LeAnn, Franky, Morgan, Katie, Harrison, Jayden, Alaysia; three great-great-grandchildren, Cody, Lexy, Ava; and three sisters, Peggy Edwards, Selma Evans, and Nannie Mae Burroughs.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and following the service at the home of her daughter, Abbie Hopkins, 747 Old Pamlico Beach Road, Belhaven.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to those from Greenfield Place who lovingly cared for Mavis and the staff of Vidant Medical Center of Greenville for all their help and support.  Also, a special thank you to her cousin, Jenny Lou Strickland, for her visits, haircuts and being there for her.
