Dorothy (Harvey) Bryant of the Terra Ceia community went home to sing in the heavenly choir on September 17, 2012. She was the second of ten children born to the late William McCoy Harvey, Sr. and Ella Mae Harvey.
At an early age, she became a member of Queen’s Chapel Church of Christ, in Terra Ceia, NC, where she performed with the Harvey singers and sang in the choir.
She attended school at the former Beaufort County High School in Pantego, NC, where she sang in the glee club and graduated in 1957. Dorothy worked in the farm fields prior to moving to Brooklyn, New York in 1965, where she worked for the telephone company.
Dorothy married her childhood sweetheart Ernest Bryant at the home of her parents on December 26, 1965. Born to Dorothy and Ernest was her loving daughter Karen Bryant.
Dorothy moved back to Terra Ceia in 1974 where she and Ernest built a beautiful house. They re-established relationships with Queen Chapel Church and Terra Ceia First Baptist Church. Dorothy was a dedicated church worker who enjoyed ministering to the youth of the churches.
Dorothy went to work for National Spinning Company in 1974 and retired in 2006 after 32 years.
Dorothy was a family and community leader. She was the person to call on if you wanted something to be done. As the family leader, Dorothy always knew what to do. Growing up, she looked after her younger brothers and sisters. As her parents aged, she looked after them until their deaths.
Singing was her passion. No event was complete unless she sang. Birthday celebrations, family reunions, church services and home going celebrations were all blessed with her praising the LORD with song. Some of her favorites were “Falling in Love with Jesus”, “It is For Me”, It’s Your Time”, and “I will Trust in the Lord”.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband Ernest and daughter Karen; three brothers: William Thomas Harvey (Barbara), William McCoy Harvey, Jr. (Phyllis Romaine), Joseph D. Harvey (Cynthia); five sisters: Gloria Johnson (Wondell), Etta Mae Satterthwaite, Ellene Roberson (Charles), Emily Bowen, and Beverly Roach (Ronald); four aunts: Maybelle Satterthwaite, Olivia Whitaker, Sadie Harvey and Beatrice Minix; sister cousins: Irene Westbrook and Hattie McCarvin; brother cousins: Willie Warren Simpson, Leroy Simpson and Archie L. Minix, Sr.: a dedicated niece: Linda S. Dance; and a host of nieces and nephews, other cousins and friends.
Home going service will be Saturday at 11:00 AM, September 22, 2012, at the Temple of Jesus Christ, 906 W. Eighth St., Washington, NC; with Elder Dwight Spruill Presiding / Bishop Wondell Johnson Eulogist.
