William Edward Payne, 62, of 13165 North Lake Road, Engelhard, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA.
Born in Tyrrell County, he was the son of the late William O. Gibbs and Mary Payne. He was married to the former Marie Bleveins who survives. Her served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and the Vietnam era.
He was a wonderful brother, father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family, Michael Gibbs, Shay Gibbs, Debbie Gibbs, Beverly Gibbs and Ricky Bleveins.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Gibbs family cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son Charles Payne of Austell GA; a daughter Connie P. Jenkins of Richmond VA; three brothers Lee Cahoon of Louisburg, NC, Harry Cahoon, Alfred Gibbs of Columbia, NC; a sister Mary Ellen Gibbs of Columbia, NC; three grandchildren Benjamin E. Poe, Chelsea Gonzales and Audrey Jenkins; two great-grandchildren Gabriela Gonzales and Ryan E. Kirby.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dalton Cahoon, and a sister, Shelby Payne.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at the home.
