Mrs. Edythe Jackson Harris Benson, 97, a resident of Pantego, NC died Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Vidant Pungo Hospital in Belhaven, NC.
A graveside funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2012, at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth, NC officiated by Jon Langley and Ethan Coltrain. George Phelps, Jerod Benson, Caleb Coltrain, Ronnie Coltrain, Jody Howery and Neal Ahearn will serve as pallbearers. Jackie Phelps, Chuck Williams, Mike Ahearn and Greg Coltrain will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Benson was born in Washington County on October 24, 1915, to the late Raleigh Jackson and Annie Sarah Jackson. Mrs. Benson was married to Harold L. Harris, who preceded her in death in 1960. She later married John J. Benson Jr., who preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Benson was a retired store clerk and manager with Belk’s of Washington and Plymouth, NC. She was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ where she had served as choir director, Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Mrs. Benson is survived by a stepson, Mickey Benson and wife Connie of Pantego, NC; a sister: Carita Jackson Phelps of Plymouth, NC, son-in-law: Fred Toler, Jr. of Washington, NC, grandchildren: Teresa Toler Fletcher and husband Stephen of Pantego, NC, Derek Toler of Rocky Mount, NC, Fred A. Toler III, great-grandchildren: Stephen Fletcher, IV, Caroline Elizabeth Fletcher and Alexis Toler step-grandchildren: Bev Coltrain, Amanda Sawyer, Karen Carson, Jerod Benson, Ken Benson and Jay Benson, and ten step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 29, 2012, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wilkinson Church of Christ, 141 Wilkinson Station Road, Pantego, NC 27860 or to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889.
