Mr. Sam N. Pearce, Sr., 98, of Greenville and Washington, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, Greenville.
Mr. Pearce, a native of Louisburg, was a graduate of Louisburg High School and Louisburg Junior College where he was a pitcher on the baseball team. He served in the United States Army during
WWII in the Pacific and European Theatre and received a Purple Heart.
He lived in Washington from 1945 until moving to Greenville in 1961. He worked for Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. for many years, retiring in 1984. He was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington and was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church in Greenville.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Pearce Hoyt; and a brother, David Kennie Pearce.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Lucas Pearce; sons, Timothy S. Pearce, of Washington and Sam N. Pearce, Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Rocky Mount, VA; daughter, Martha P. Campbell and husband, Stewart, of Greenville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
