Eloise Tune Jefferson, called “Tunie” by her friends, was born in Java, Virginia, on February 28, 1919. She was the only daughter of the late Nannie Sue Ferguson Tune and Ross Armstead Tune.
Tunie moved to Washington, North Carolina, as a young girl and graduated from Washington High School in 1936 where she was on the girls’ basketball team. She earned a business degree from Hardbarger’s Business School in Raleigh. After graduation she worked for Jefferson Gas and Appliance Company where she met her husband. She and Jeff were married September 2, 1939, at First Baptist Church in Washington. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and sang in the church choir for over 50 years. She also sang in the Washington Choral Society and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends.
Tunie’s travels included New York City, Rome, Hawaii, Florida, and Ocracoke, traveling to the island on the mail boat. She and her husband enjoyed their home at Edgewater Beach — boating, fishing, gigging, and crabbing. Their Chris Craft boat (named “Susie-Q”) was a familiar sight on the Pamlico River.
She spent her last years at Spring Arbor in Wilson and River Trace in Washington. We are thankful for the professional care she received at each facility.
Mrs. Jefferson is survived by three daughters, Sue Jefferson of Washington, NC; Pat Gautier and husband Beverly of Sanford, NC; and Lynette Thomas and husband Allen of Wilson, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Jefferson, two brothers, Roy and Cecil Tune, and one great-grandson, Noah Jones.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church in Washington, NC. c/o
