A head-on car crash on VOA Road on Tuesday night cost one Washington man his life.

Charlie “Chuck” Edward Godley IV, 25, of Wharton Station Road in Washington, died after his Kia SUV veered across the center line and hit an oncoming Dodge pick-up truck carrying Gregory Lee Williams, 50, and Deborah Martin, 57, both of Major Smith Road in Greenville.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Godley was travelling north on VOA Road at about 8:57 p.m. when the two vehicles collided.

A helicopter air ambulance from EastCare, Pactolus Volunteer Fire Department, Clark’s Neck Fire Department and Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS responded to the scene of the accident, where emergency personnel found the vehicles in the road near the point of impact. The SUV and pick-up sustained major damage, with smoke coming from the pick-up truck, according to Washington Fire Chief Robbie Rose.

“They had some lengthy extrication going on out there,” Rose said. “They didn’t transport anyone from the scene (by air) because none of (the victims) were stable enough to fly.”

Rose said paramedics from Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS, Pactolus VFD and EastCare all worked to stabilize the three victims, while Clark’s Neck VFD personnel worked to remove them from the wrecked vehicles. Two of the victims, including Godley, were transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville by ambulance; the other, to Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Rose said. Williams and Martin were hospitalized with serious, but nonlife-threatening, injuries, according to authorities.

Authorities said Wednesday there was no indication as to why Godley crossed the center line, but they are still investigating.
