Local talent seeks seminar, showcase

A future in music and its production is the focus of a seminar this weekend at Inner Banks Artisans’ Center in Washington.

From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, visiting producers from 5050 Music Group will coach local talent on what it takes to get into the music business on a professional level, according to LaVon Drake.

“They’re going to be talking about things you want to know about the business side of music,” Drake said.

The event is free and open to the public, though space is limited, she noted.

At 7 p.m. the same night, local talent will be showcased in two locations: Inner Banks Artisans’ Center and 140 W. Main Street. It’s a rare opportunity for aspiring musicians to get feedback from music-business professionals, according to Drake.

“They’ll be giving suggestions as to how they can improve their presentations,” she explained.

Drake said there are plenty of acts lined up for the seminar and showcase, including local artists like 12-year-old singer/songwriter Caroline Dare, rock band K-OS and Chuck Phillips (who also plays with CAPS), and a slew of those coming from out of town to attend, many of whom Drake got to know through music connections on Facebook or her role of lining up acts for Washington’s Music in the Streets.

Drake took advantage of the producers’ trip to Washington to audition talent for 5050 artist JoceLien’s upcoming music video shoot.

“I’ve always wanted to find a way to promote our local musicians,” Drake said. “We’ve got good musicians here that a lot of people don’t know about. For a small place like this, to be recognized and for them to take note that we’re here, I felt like it was something I couldn’t pass up … Things just fell into place.”

For those not yet on the set lists, there are some slots left in the showcase section for solo artists and acoustic bands, Drake said.

“If they want to show up at 7 p.m., I’ll add them into the mix,” she said.

Inner Banks Artisans’ Center is located at 158 W. Main Street, Washington.
