An open casting call for a new music video will take place at Chocowinity Volunteer Fire Department today and tomorrow.
Up and coming R & B artist JoceLien will be filming the video to her song “Love Struck” in downtown Washington, at the Pitt County Fair and other locations Sept. 25-30.
Over the last few months, Washington has seen several visits, and performances, by the 14-year-old singer from Greenville. JoceLien has been on the Music in the Streets main stage this summer and sang the National Anthem for downtown Washington’s Fourth of July celebration. She won first prize in the youth division at the Carolina Music Awards held in Raleigh in July and was crowned Miss Black Talented Teen USA, a nationwide competition, on Aug. 11. This Sunday, she will perform at Harmony on the Harbor, Washington Harbor District Alliance’s free concert series in Festival Park, along with Ronnie Run, the Drake Brothers and Last Serenade — all bands made up of musicians with local roots. And she’ll be bringing a production crew into town in September to film her first video.
Producers are looking for kids ages of all races and ethnicities, ages 11 through 17, that fall into the following categories: main lead male, friends male, friends female, featured extras; carnival characters (listed are water skier, skater, cheerleader); dancers, including hip hop and break dancers for a dance routine; and non-featured extras, like a football coach, referee and customers in an ice cream shop. There is no age limit for extras.
LaVon Drake, who finds talent for Washington’s monthly Music in the Streets outdoor, mini-music festival, is helping to organize the auditions. She became involved when producers approached her about filming the video on JoceLien’s home territory.
Drake is encouraging anyone to audition.
“If they don’t meet the criteria for one of the leads, they can sign up to be an extra,” Drake explained. “We’ve got some talented locals and we’d really like to see them for consideration for some of these parts … We basically want to see some faces and some energy and some talent.”
The video will have a number of scenes including one filmed on the water and another at a local football stadium, Drake said. She’s looking at the video as an opportunity to showcase eastern North Carolina.
“The good thing is that it’s going to bring a lot of publicity to the entire county,” Drake said. “It’s a good opportunity to promote our area and the talent we have here.”
Drake said there have been numerous in and out of state inquiries about parts since the casting call was listed on www.thesoutherncastingcall.com but as far as turnout is concerned, she not sure how many people will show up.
“When it gets down to it, I have no idea,” Drake laughed. “We’re preparing for anything.”
Those interested in auditioning for prominent roles in “Love Struck” should come prepared, according to the website www.lovestruckjocelien.com. A headshot, bio and 30-second video showcasing talent must be submitted at the time of audition. Extras, of any age, can just bring themselves, according to Drake.
Auditions will be held today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chocowinity Volunteer Fire Department, located at 512 N.C. Highway 33 East, Chocowinity.
