Jackson Crawford Harris Jr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va — Jackson Crawford Harris, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 23, 2013.

Born in Norfolk to Jackson C. Harris Sr. and Gladys McShane on March 20, 1925. He started his career as a pipefitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Jack joined the US Navy in 1943 and served until the end of World War II. He owned J.C. Harris Plumbing Co. in Norfolk for 25 years.

In May of 1942, he married Lucille Rowland and they celebrated their 71st anniversary this year. In 1974, he and Lucille retired to Columbia, NC and lived there until one year ago when they moved to Chesapeake to be closer to family. Jack enjoyed fishing all his life, especially surf fishing on Hatteras Island. He was also a talented woodworker. He was singularly devoted to his faith in Jesus Christ and ministry of the Word, serving as a deacon at Temple Baptist Church in Norfolk. In Columbia, he was a charter member and a deacon at Faith Baptist Church, where he also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. Jack loved to share the Gospel with everyone he met. He regularly ministered to residents of the Union Mission in Norfolk, preaching and singing hymns and Gospel songs with his good friends, Mary Jane and Snooky Jarvis.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Lucille; two children, Peggy Pollara, and her husband, Barry Pollara, of Virginia Beach; Jackson C. Harris, III and his wife, Jeannie Harris of Crystal Beach, FL; grandchildren, Sarah Lucas and her husband, Brian Lucas of Norfolk; Clare Price of Crystal Beach, FL; Patrick Price and his wife Melinda, of Shreveport, LA; and three great-grand children, Robert and Carter Lucas, and Chad Price.

The funeral will be held at Faith Baptist Church, Columbia, NC on Saturday, October 26, at 2PM with interment thereafter at Azalea Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, 416 Road Street Ext., Columbia, NC, 27925-9579.
