Mary “Virginia” Duke Green

Mrs. Mary “Virginia” Duke Greene passed away October 26, 2013 at the Oaks at Mayview, Raleigh, NC, where she had resided since May 30, 2013.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and will be conducted by Dr. Greg Barmer. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Virginia was born in Washington, NC on September 22, 1926 to John W. and Lillie Evans Duke. She graduated from Washington High School in 1944, and attended Geyer Business College in Charlotte, NC, where she met her future husband, Ralph Greene. They were married in Washington, NC on March 16, 1946, and shared 56 years together until his death in 2002 in Wilmington, NC, where they had lived since 1970.
Virginia worked for many years in a secretarial and office administrative capacity in the insurance industry in both Washington and Wilmington, NC, and later in the electrical supply business in Wilmington where she was once voted Business Woman of the Year. In 2003 Virginia returned to Washington and lived at The Willows. When physically able, she attended First Baptist Church in Washington. She was recently honored by the Washington Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years of membership. Virginia was a wonderful cook, loved the color purple, and to hear piano music, especially Chopin. She took much delight in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors are her son Alan and wife Carol, of Cary, NC; granddaughter Anna Liland and husband, David, of New Bern, NC; granddaughter Rachel Carr and husband, Billy, of Garner, NC; grandson Justin Greene of Cary, NC, and three great-grandsons. She is also survived by nieces Pat Woolard, Ann Sanders, and Barbara Jones, nephew Cleveland Duke, and their families.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Oaks at Mayview and Hospice of Wake County for their extraordinary loving care of Virginia over the past several months.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 12:45 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
