Fake check leads to arrest

On Aug. 8, 2013, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fraud at Piggly Wiggly on River Road in Washington. Deputies responded and discovered that a suspect had cashed a fake check. Deputies collected evidence and started an investigation.
As a result of the investigation, Investigator Christina Dixon applied for and obtained a warrant charging Walter Lee Murphy Jr., age 47, of Elks Road in Greenville with possession of a counterfeit instrument, uttering forged instrument and obtaining property by false pretense. Murphy turned himself in at the Magistrates’ Office on Nov. 11. He was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $7,500 secured bond set by Magistrate David Curtis.
