Joe Chambliss

Joseph Barrow Chambliss, age 84, passed away peacefully at home with his wife Kathye by his side on December 9th in Greenville, NC.
A native of Rocky Mount, NC, he was pre-deceased by his parents Norman Yates Chambliss and Julia Barrow Chambliss. Joe graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia and then enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He was head cheerleader at Carolina and remained a die-hard fan his entire life.
After serving as a pilot in the US Air Force, Joe returned to North Carolina where he obtained his law degree from UNC in 1959. He moved to Clinton, NC and established his law practice as a trial attorney. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and faithfully served in many leadership roles in the church and community.
In his later years, Joe went on to fulfill his real passion as “dock master” on the Outer Banks for over 15 years.
With his four-legged companion Petu constantly by his side, Joe worked the docks tirelessly building relationships and sharing his “Dock and Relax” philosophy.
Joe is survived by his wife Kathye Bennett Chambliss, two brothers Norman Y. Chambliss Jr. and wife Nancy of Rocky Mount, NC, Dr. Mallory L. Chambliss and wife Mary of Winston Salem, NC; son, Joseph B. Chambliss Jr. and wife Terry Wallace of Durham, NC, daughter Julia Chambliss Roberts and husband Stewart of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Carter and Tyler Chambliss and Jason, Adam and Benjamin Roberts.
A celebration of life for Joe will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity, NC at 11:00am Saturday December 14, 2013.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge, 930-A Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834 and Trinity Episcopal Church, 82 NC Hwy 33 West, Chocowinity, NC 27817.

Joe leaves behind many friends and family that will miss his special smile, quick wit, and gentle manner. He will leave a lasting legacy to all those that knew him.
