Christmas music abounds at First Presbyterian Church of Washington this week as two special concerts are lined up for the holiday season.

On Wednesday, organist Christiano Rizzotto will perform a solo Christmas program, while Saturday evening brings Market Street Brass back for a holiday show, a favorite with local music lovers, accompanied by First Presbyterian music director and organist Michael Morgan.

Rizzotto, who hails from Brazil, might be remembered as the organist at First United Methodist Church while he was working on his master’s degree at East Carolina University. Now, he’s embarked on doctoral work at the University of Oklahoma and will be visiting the area briefly. According to Morgan, Rizzotta reached out to the church, offering the Christmas concert as a thank you for his positive experience at FUMC, as well as his many practice hours on the organ at First Presbyterian Church.

“I think it’s amazing that he has come from Brazil to get his music education in the United States,” Morgan said. “He’s a fantastic organist. He’s going to be someone we’re hearing about further on down the road.”

Rizzotto’s concert will be held in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday and is free to the public.

Saturday at 7 p.m., Greensboro-based Market Street Brass returns after a year off from their annual Washington Christmas performance. The brass quintet will play holiday favorites and traditional Christmas music, led by an entertaining Edward Bach, trumpeter for the group. Market Street Brass’ holiday concert has been a crowd pleaser for many years, according to Morgan.

The performance is free, however, the church will be taking up a love offering for Backpack Buddies, a program organized through Eagle’s Wings food pantry to help feed schoolchildren with limited food sources.

The First Presbyterian Church sanctuary entrance is located on Gladden Street between Main and Second streets in Washington.
