Boot Scootin’ Boogie: Restaurant adds dancing to the menu

One Washington restaurant is adding dessert of a different kind to its menu this year: dancing.

Saturday at 9 p.m., Apollo’s Steakhouse is pushing back the tables and giving customers the opportunity to work off those dinner calories with country line dancing and the tunes of DJ Keith Manning.

“We’re going to clear the interior of the dining room,” said General Manager Angel Borg. “I just feel like we should do something fun after dinner.”

Since the steakhouse opened, Borg has been polling her customers about what entertainment they’d like to see at the restaurant. So far, the answers have fallen into a few categories: comedy, country line dancing, old-school dance music and shagging to beach music. This premiere event, for which there is no charge, takes care of one of those suggestions.

“If the country doesn’t appeal to them, they can come in for the oldies. If that doesn’t appeal to them, they can come in for the shag dancing. We’re going to find something that they like,” Borg explained.

These days, line dancing may be associated with country music and dance, but its folk dance roots date back centuries. Contemporary line dances consist of a choreographed, repeated sequence of steps that people dance in rows, so plenty of room is needed for the dancers.

But just because the tables are pushed back, doesn’t mean the kitchen is closed for business, Borg said.

“We’re going to experiment and leave (the kitchen) open. I just think you should always have food ready for people who work up an appetite dancing,” Borg said.

While Borg may be giving customers a place to kick up their heels and have a good time, as well as work up an appetite, on Saturday night, she said she doesn’t plan to take to the dance floor herself.

“I’m all thumbs — or all toes,” she laughed. “I can’t dance to save my life.”

Apollo’s Steakhouse is located 228 Stewart Parkway, Washington. The country line dancing will run 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Over 21 is required.
