Family and friends gathered recently on the eve of the eighty-fifth anniversary of the birth of Alma Marie Davis Whitaker. The theme for the event, which was coordinated by the grandchildren of the honoree, was “Living A Legacy of Love and Service.”
Jozette Wilkinson, granddaughter, served as mistress of ceremony. Invocation and prayer were offered by Elder Barry James with special scriptural readings offered by Jakaii Brooks, great-granddaughter.
After a catered meal, Patricia Whitaker, Jozette Wilkinson, Michelle Daley, Stacey Wilkinson and Marcus Whitaker, the honoree’s grandchildren, then rose to present a humorous reflection of historical events that occurred during each decade of the honoree’s life.
A tribute highlighting the honoree’s service, was presented by Sophia S. McCloud, on behalf of the members of the St. James Church of Christ. Cynthia Heath followed with a highlight of the honorees’ career, civic and community service. A tribute of the honoree’s service as an electoral poll worker was then presented by Elaine Hudnell. The honoree was then saluted by her sisters, Dorothy D. White and Yvonne D. Goodman, nieces Gwen W. Harkley and Greta D. Brooks and friends.
The Whitaker’s grandchildren made a final salute as they presented the honoree with a crystal water ball, their version of a Grammy Award.
Closing remarks were made by the Whitaker.
Guests enjoyed a meal, which was catered by Argentina Freeman, family friend, and received a hefty slice of birthday cake, decorated in celebratory colors, prepared by Angela Logan.
