George T. Tyer

September 6, 1934 – March 30, 2014

 

Mr. George Taylor Tyer, age 79, a resident of 2153 Herring Run Road, Blounts Creek, died Sunday March 30, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the Weston Family Cemetery in Blounts Creek and will be conducted by Howard Waters.

Mr. Tyer was born in Pitt County on September 6, 1934 to the late George and Mary Allred Tyer. On January 21, 1995 he married Catherine Weston who preceded him in death. On May 22, 2004 he married Mary Cavanagh who survives. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and retired as a Staff Sargent after 23 years of service. He then went on to receive an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Central Carolina Community College in Sanford and became a Deputy Sheriff in Harnett County. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and Elizabeth Chapel Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Tyer, one daughter, Gladys Jean Tyer of Angier, NC, four sons, Mitchell Owen Tyer of Angier, NC, Richard Bowen Tyer of Lillington, NC, John Taylor Tyer of Fort Dix, NJ, George Edward Tyer of Lillington, NC, seven step sons, David Cavanagh, Denver, CO, SGT. Shane Cavanagh of Colorado Springs, CO, Daniel Cavanagh of Chocowinity, Jason Cavanagh of New Bern, Quentin Cavanagh of Greenville, SC, Forrest Clint Batchelor of Syracuse, NY and Johnnie Batchelor of Blounts Creek, one brother, John Lee Tyer of Phenix, AL, one sister, Anna Belle Richardson of Grandy, NC, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Tyer and one sister, Mollie Belle Tyer.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm until 8:30pm Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at 204 E. 15th St., Washington.
