Dream Factory Inc. will be hosting a Dirty Dash 5K in Greenville Saturday, May 3.

The race will help raise money to grant dreams to chronically and critically ill children all across 29 eastern North Carolina counties, including here in Beaufort.

“When you get to see the reaction of a little girls when her dream is granted, it’s pretty cool stuff,” said race organizer Jerry Fisher. “You can’t duplicate something like that.”

Beginning at the Bicycle Post mountain biking trails on Short Bridge Road, competitors will fight through 15 obstacles – everything from eight-foot-tall walls to an ice water puzzle made from a dumpster.

Fisher says that 90 percent of all money fundraised is used to grant dreams, an impressive percentage compared to other nonprofit organizations. The group is also run entirely by volunteers, and has managed to double the amount of dreams granted from last year.

“Kids ideas of dreams, sometimes they dream really big and sometimes it’s very simple things,” Fisher said.

Runners are encouraged to sign up at runsignup.com, and can register to start the race in different timeslots, the first one being at 9 a.m. and the last being at 12 p.m.
