The owner of a childcare facility shut down by the state Monday night was arrested today by Washington police.
Darwin Woolard, 45, a resident of the Smallwood neighborhood in Washington and owner of Kingdom Kids Academy in Washington, has been charged with misdemeanor assault on a child under 12, according to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford. Woolard is also a former Washington City Councilman.
Drakeford said the matter came to law enforcement’s attention on April 23, after the mother of a three-year-old child enrolled at Kingdom Kids Academy reported that her child had been slapped in the face the previous day. Investigation determined that the assault did occur on April 22, Drakeford said.
Drakeford said there was no other Kingdom Kids Academy staff involved in the incident.
Kingdom Kids Academy was abruptly shut down Monday night by officials with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, leaving 83 children enrolled in the daycare–29 of which were after school students–with no childcare in place for the following day. Beaufort/Hyde Partnership for Children Executive Director Lisa Woolard said her agency, and DSS, are helping parents find suitable replacement childcare.
Woolard was arrested around 3:15 p.m. and was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under at $10,000 secured bond.
