Phillip Wayne Sherman, age 70, a resident of W. Pungo St., Belhaven, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at home. There will be a graveside celebration of his life at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in Oakdale Cemetery, officiated by Rev. James Richard Quidley and Rev. Allen Harmon. Special music will be provided by Scott Quidley and Double Portion. Jeff Dodd, Steve Quidley, Derek Noble, Tim Dodd, Fred Brooks and Scott Quidley will serve as pallbearers. C.D. Gibbs (uncle) and Harry Nixon will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at First Assembly of God, Belhaven.
Mr. Sherman was born September 6, 1943 in Rose Bay, son of the late Clarence Herbert Sherman and Marjorie Gibbs Carawan. He graduated from John A. Wilkinson High School in 1962 and attended East Carolina University. On February 7, 1964 he married Gayle Quidley who survives. Mr. Sherman was self-employed as a commercial fisherman and owned Sherman’s Lawn Mowing Service. He also had worked at F.W. Woolworths and was assistant manager at Woolco Dept. Store in Natchez, Miss. He worked at Texas Gulf for ten years and he worked with Grady Furlough Towing Co. Mr. Sherman attended First Assembly of God in Belhaven. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bike riding, gardening, baseball and bowling.
In addition to his wife, Gayle Quidley Sherman, he is survived by his children, Phillip W. Sherman, Jr. and wife Paula of Pantego, Angela S. Hudnell and Amber Sherman both of Belhaven; his grandchildren, Caleb Sherman, Caroline Sherman, Kirbyanne Sherman, Kayleigh Sherman, Matthew Hudnell, Natalie Hudnell and Alaina Bowen; and his half-sister, Linda Sturgill of Va.
