An opening reception tonight launches the annual Beaufort County Arts Council’s Members’ Exhibit at the Turnage Theater.

Forty-six works, by 46 members, will be on display from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The show remains up until July 10, when the arts council’s annual juried photography show goes up on the walls at the theater’s gallery.

While the number of pieces is smaller than past years’ exhibits, the quality of work has not been diminished, said Joey Toler, executive director of the arts council.

“I think (the quality) is the same,” Toler said. “You have the full perspective: you have professional artists, right down to the people who are exhibiting for the very first time in this show. And that’s one of the reasons why we do it — to give people a place to exhibit who are just getting their feet wet.”

The watercolors, oils, acrylics, sculpture and textiles making up the show represent a cross-section of BCAC artists and their collections.

In previous years, members were allowed to submit two works for the exhibit, but the reduction in wall space from the Washington Civic Center — where the exhibit was previously held — to the BCAC Gallery at the Turnage required a reassessment of the volume of entries.

“This year we knocked it down to one (entry), because we don’t have quite as much space,” Toler said.

The public is invited to the opening reception tonight and to view the exhibit during the arts council’s regular hours: Tuesdays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Beaufort County Arts Council is located at 150 W. Main St., Washington. From more information about this exhibit and upcoming shows, visit www.beaufortcountyartscouncil.org.
