WASHINGTON — Athletic Edge gained some ground in the Washington Junior Babe Ruth Conference standings on Tuesday with a win over second-place Coca-Cola, 10-2.
There was certainly no shortage of B’s in this marquee-pitching match up, as Athletic Edge ace Ben Beech took on Coke’s Bryson Brooks.
In a shortened five-inning contest due to time constraints, Beech remained consistent. Both Beech and Brooks retired the side, respectively, in a first inning that lasted under 10 minutes.
But the second was a different story, lasting almost a half hour. For Coke, Drew Ferguson and Vick started things off with back-to-back singles, moving into scoring position on a passed ball. After Ferguson scored on a sac fly to center, Beech later worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with a groundout and strikeout.
Brooks would not be so lucky in the bottom half of the frame. After a walk to Logan Craft, an RBI-double to the fence in left-center from Dustin Johnson and an RBI-single from Beech, Brooks lost command and walked three-straight batters after recording the first and second outs of the inning.
Will Crisp relieved Brooks, but walked two batters with the bases loaded before recording the final out. When the dust settled, Athletic Edge had chalked up five runs, all earned to Brooks.
In the top of the third, Coke notched another run after Blake Parker singled and scored via a couple of groundouts.
As Beech contained the Coke bats for the remainder of the game, Athletic Edge kept up the offensive attack, scoring four in the third on hits by Jeremiah Moore, Craft, Brady Moore and Isac Paul on top of a slew of walks.
Beech pitched all five innings for his team, allowing just two runs and striking out five.
With the loss, Coke drops to 5-3, while Athletic Edge improves to 4-4, just one game back of Coke. Athletic Edge will face W&B Lawncare Friday in Washington. Coke will face Dick’s Sporting Goods Friday in Chocowinity.
