At the annual Women of the Year luncheon on June 14, Democratic Women of Beaufort County and honored guests met with State Auditor Beth Wood.
Wood’s role as state auditor is to review the state’s financial data and to report the facts, regardless of party or program. Her role in state government ensures that citizens know how their tax dollars are being used and whether they are being used responsibly.
Wood emphasized that she is a product of successful North Carolina programs, from growing up on a farm in Cove City in Craven County, to public schools and a public university. She said she worked hard with the opportunities provided for her that were available for everyone at that time, but as time as gone on those programs have become far less accessible. She is concerned that North Carolina no longer supports citizens in a way that means an average person with average means can go on to hold elected office.
While Wood was honored for her dedication to North Carolinians, several local Democrats were acknowledged as well. Rosemary Edwards, founder of the Beaufort County Democratic Women in 1970, LaRue Alligood, Linnea Battle, Ed and Eltha Booth, and Surry and Dorothy Everett were all recognized for the many years of good works they have created in the community.
Also in attendance were County Commissioner Ed Booth, Clerk of Superior Court Marty Paramore, Sheriff Alan Jordan, and District Attorney Seth Edwards, son of honoree Rosemary Edwards. The luncheon was held in the home of Democratic Women President Cathy Gaynor and her husband James.
