ECA 14U swimmers compete at state championship

East Carolina Aquatics had a weekend for the record books at the 2014 N.C. 14 and Under Long Course Championships held July 17-20 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
With just 20 swimmers competing, ECA placed 13th overall out of more than 50 teams across the state.
In a close race, the 9-10 girls’ 200 freestyle relay team of Eleanor Blount, Emma Hastings, Addy Quinn and Claire Chesnutt captured third place. Hastings held off a charging swimmer from the YMCA of the Triangle Area for the team to take third by two hundredths of a second. The girls’ time of 2:15.17 shattered the previous record by 13 seconds. The same quartet posted a new team record in the 9-10 girls’ 200 medley relay with a time of 2:40.63, besting the 2006 mark by nine seconds. They placed eighth overall.
Quinn took individual records in the 400 free, 50 backstroke and 100 back. Her 400 free time of 5:27.70 placed third overall in a race that came down to the last stroke with teammate Hastings, who was also under the team record. Quinn placed ninth in the 100 back (1:25.44) and 11th in the 50 back (39.24). She also placed seventh in the 200 free at 2:38.89.
Hastings set a record in the 100 butterfly, clocking 1:24.17 to place ninth. She was fourth in the 400 free (5:27.94) and 100 free (1:12.93), and placed fifth in the 200 free (2:35.85). She also had scoring swims in the 200 individual medley (eighth, 2:59.49), 50 fly (13th, 36.66), and 50 free (15th, 33.39).
The 11-12 boys’ 200 free relay of Jack Hastings, Sadler Smith, Jack Nowacek and Will Barker placed 15th with a time of 2:05.96. Nowacek placed fourth in the 50 breast with a time of 37.76. He also was 14th in the 100 breast (1:26.30). Trevor Torres finished 14th in the 50 breast (38.86). Barker placed 16th in the 50 back with a time of 34.51.
The 13-14 girls’ 400 free relay of Abigail Burns, Svea Torres, Virginia Kohake and Morgan Despres finished 14th, missing the team record by just three hundredths of a second. The same quartet placed 16th in the 800 free relay. Despres finished 10th in the 50 free at finals with 28.55. Torres placed 14th in the 100 breast (1:20.25).
The 13-14 Boys’ 800 free relay of Cameron Eure, Andrew Landry, James Reindl and Grant Meadows placed 12th. The same group placed 14th in the 400 free relay and 11th in the 400 medley relay. Reindl was ECA’s standout, placing fifth in the 200 breast with a new team record time of 2:39.50. Reindl went 5:00.81 in the 400 IM to take sixth and was seventh in the 100 breast with his time of 1:14.61. He was also a finalist in the 200 back placing 14th at 2:22.91.
Other competitors included Matt Hardy, Lyndsey Reeve and Patrick Reindl.
East Carolina Aquatics is a non-profit, year round swim team for children and adults with almost 450 swimmers in Cape Carteret, Greenville, Morehead City and Washington.
